Aizawl: The controversy over MBBS quota at the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore appears to be finally over with Mizoram Higher and Technical Minister Pu Lalsawta stating that the 27 seats will be based strictly on merit, reports ‘The Zozam Times’.
The minister also said that since Sylvia Lalthakimi ranked 40th in the entrance exam she will be alloted the 27th seat reserved for Mizoram under the Central scheme at the CMC. It may be mentioned that one Carolyne J. Lalhruitluangi, who ranked 283 had taken admission at the CMC on the recommendation of Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla and several former Union ministers. However, this year Mizoram did not get a seat at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) in New Delhi, but instead got one each at CMC, Vellore and Patna Medical College, Patna. So, Carolyne’s seat was automatically placed under the ‘Central pool’, thus triggering a controversy.
While praising Carolyne for securing the seat at the CMC, Pu Lalsawta, however, said, “Since, the seat was allotted to Mizoram under central pool quota; an individual cannot claim the Mizoram quota except through the merit list.”
Topper T.T Iamo s/o TT Vakhu of Saiha will get CMC, Vellore seat while Sylvia Lalthakimi, who was not given MBBS seat earlier will get Patna Medical College, in Patna, Bihar, the rest will continue with the allotment made earlier, the minister added.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pu Lal Thanhawla had allegedly told reporters that he stands by Carolyne and that no one can take the seat away from her. Clarifying the CM’s statement, Pu Lalsawta said that Pu Hawla was not aware that Carolyne stood at 283 in the entrance test.
