London cops question Pakistan cricketers

Pakistan cricket fraternity reacted with shock and anger on Sunday to the latest ‘spot-fixing’ scandal that rocked the national team in the fourth Test against England at Lord’s. London Metropolitan police had arrested one Mazhar Majeed for allegedly paying bribes to some players to spot-fix the ongoing Test.

Although no cricketer has been charged but the interrogation of players, including newly-appointed captain Salman Butt and the pace duo of Muhammed Aamri and Muhammed Asif, for alleged ‘spot-fixing’ continues a disturbing trend in Pakistan cricket, wherein corruption has become a massive problem.

The former test captain Aamir Sohail, demanded the immediate calling back of the accused players and Pakistan team management in the wake of the spot fixing allegations.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousef Raza Gilani said the allegations made his country bow its head in shame. He has asked his government’s Ministry of Sport to conduct an inquiry. Pakistan’s Sports Minister Ijaz Jakhrani said any players found guilty would face life bans.
