Blackberry services to come under govt scanner

From Black to white: Govt wants readable message.

New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has decided to put the data transmitted by Blackberry devices, Skype services and Gmail, the Centre under the scanner.

Department of Telecom (DoT) sources said that the Centre will ask these companies to share data going through their networks with security agencies in a readable format.

If the companies fail to follow the directive, the DoT is likely to take stern action including banning their services in the country, sources said.

Two years ago security agencies have raised similar concerns about Blackberry services but it was put on the backburner. But with the Home Ministry is working hard to secure the country’s communication network, the DoT now has decided to take a tough stand by asking private telecom companies to share the details.
