Green Day observed in Mizoram

Aizawl/Kolasib: Over 5,000 saplings of various species were planted in various places on Green Mizoram Day on June 16.
In a function held in Assam Rifles Parade Ground in the morning, the Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla underlined the urgent need for plantation of trees for replacement of the damaged forests. He also asked the people to protect and preserve valuable forest resources, flora and fauna to prevent damaged to ecological balance.
Referring to the activities of Green Mizoram Committee during the last 11 years, the Chief Minister said, over 16 lakh, 50 thousand trees have been planted and the need of the hour is to protect and nurture them. He also release a book entitled ‘Bamboos of Mizoram’ published by Environment and Forest Department.
The function was presided over by Environment & Forests Minister, Mr. H. Rohluna. Immediately after the function, the Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla led his Council of Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, MLAs and Officials in plantation of trees in the open space around the Assam Rifle Parade Ground. Meanwhile saplings were distributed at the City Park by Environment and Forest Department.
Over 150 individuals and voluntary organizations collected the saplings for plantation. About 200 government servants also planted trees along the road side between Melthum and Falkawn.
Green Mizoram Day was also observed in Lunglei, Kolasib and Serchhip. The Deputy Commissioners, Village Council members, YMA, MHIP and MUP also involved themselves in plantation of trees. However Champhai, Mamit, Lawngtlai and Saiha are to observe Green Mizoram Day on Friday.
In Champhai, trees will be planted all along the road side of Hringlangtlang.
