Aizawl cops under fire for custodial death

Aizawl: The dead of Lalpiangliana (46) in the police custody has created uproar in Aizawl.

Aizawl SP Lalbiakthanga Khiangte has suspended four police officials who were incharge of the police station where Lalpiangliana was lodged at. They were SI VL Ramhluna, OC Luangmual O/P, ASI Prem Nath, Vivakawn P/S, Probatory ASI Gnat Lalrinchhana and Constable Chanchinliana over the dead of Lalpiangliana. The Aizawl SP also ordered departmental inquiry over the issue. For which, Addl. SP Rodingliana Chawngthu has been given the charge of inquiry and  Judicial/Magisterial Enquiry was ordered under Magistrate Lalngaihmawia Zote.

It has been reported that the victim had confessed to Aizawl SP Lalbiakthanga Khiangte on June 17 last that he had killed his father in-law, MB Rai (74) of Tanhril hamlet in Aizawl. After his confession, he was sent to Vaivakawn Police Station which is under the charge of the above suspended police officers. From there he was later sent to Aizawl Central jail on Judicial Custody. As his health deteriorates, Lalpiangliana was treated at Aizawl Civil Hospital from where he was declared dead this morning.

Lalpiangliana during his treatment at Aizawl Civil Hospital had the chance to meet his relatives and informed them that he was being tortured and brutally manhandled by the police at Vaivakawn police station.

Meanwhile, the dead of Lalpiangliana had created uproar in Aizawl where large numbers of people gheroed the police department. At first, the people along with the dead body of Lalpiangliana tried to take the corpse to Vaivakawn police station but they were blocked by the policemen.

In the days to come, the ruling Congress government in the state will face the upheal tasks of dealing the NGOs and the people over the incident as more protests are bound to crop up.
