Mizoram observes Women’s Day at Aizawl
*Get ready to be lawmakers, Pi Lal Riliani tells Mizo women
Aizawl, March 9, 2010: Mizoram celebrated Women’s Day with rest of the world yesterday here in the state capital. Organised by Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) Gen. Headquarters, the main event was held at Chanmari YMA Hall.
Indian Society on Tobacco and Health Mizoram Chapter President and Chief Minister Pu Lal Thanhawla’a wife Pi Lal Riliani grace the occasion as chief guests, according to official release.
Comparing the past and present status of women in Mizo society, Pi Riliani said, “These days women can do so many things and it’s a relief we have taken up many professions.”
However, Pi Riliani regretted that Mizo women still have a long way to go. “Even though Mizo women have achieved laurels in education, business and in government jobs when we compared ourselves along with our male counterparts we are yet to make a mark in politics and in the functioning of the church,” she told the gathering.
Pi Riliani also said that she was happy with the Parliament taking up Women Reservation Bill which would provide 33 per cent quota for women in the legislature. “When this bill is passed, Mizoram will also be having a number of woman MLAs. We need to prepare for this opportunity,” she said.
Among those present were: Chairperson, Mizoram State Women Commission, Pi Rozami; Sr.Adviser, MHIP leh MPSC Chairperson Pi B.Sangkhumi; and Chairman, Mizoram State Social Welfare Board, Pi Zothankimi.
