Imphal, March 25, 2010: While Mizoram Baptist Church decided to take action against its gay members, Manipur which is known for its Hindu and Christian orthodox outlook got its first open gay marriage on March 24.
Two Manipuris, from the Meitei community, Soibam Sandip and Nikhil Sharma tied the knot at a local auditorium in Chinganakha area under Imphal West District.
The marriage was solemmised according to Christian customs, eyewitness said.
“This is shocking incident. I’m not sure if this marriage is genuine. The couple might be trying to provoke Christians,” said Priyobata Singh, a Manipuri Christian.
Over 100 guests were present to witness the union. However, parents of both Soibam and Nikhil stayed away from the ceremony.
With this the state has became the first in the northeast to have open gay marriage. However, there has been no official confirmation from the district administration.

it is ridiculous.Marriage as per Christian biblical is btw a man and a women,We surely are witnessing the end times. They r following their own desires and lust.
kya be bapchod bhaichod. tu apne bap ko kyon nai choda. usike sath sadi kar leta. tera bap tyo teri ma ko satisfied nai kar pata. to tu apne bap ke sath gand marwata. madhaarchod. m
congrats. the moral Zeitgeist in India moving in the right direction.
Sadly, all is not hunky dory about this news.
We have got reports from activists in Manipur that on the night of the marriage, the police have arrested the couple, then released them to the custody of their parents. Their security at the moment is uncertain.
This is all the more bothersome because the police have no business interfaring in the private lives of adult individuals, especially if their actions do not hurt anyone else, and also because same sex sexual relationships are no more a crime in India after the Delhi High Court Judgement against Section 377 of Indian Penal Code.
I sincerely hope that the police in Manipur will find their right calling in tackling law and order problems, and leave innocent individuals to themselves. It is a democracy we are supposed to be living in, not a police state. The police should get off their hobby horse of moral policing and get on with their real job.
Meanwhile I hope people win Manipur who are in a position to help and ensure the security of the couple will come forward and do so.
well good for them hope they are happy
Who are christians to dictate who can and can’t marry…
