Greenpeace campaign against Nuclear Liability Bill

Submitted by on March 26, 2010 – 4:00 amNo Comment | 163 views

Bangalore, March 26, 2010: “Our government is churning out one hazardous bill after another. This time it is a bill called the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage…The bill lets U.S. corporations off the hook for any nuclear accidents they cause on Indian soil,” says Greenpeace statement issued here yesterday.

The Nuclear Liability Bill is coming up for a vote in Parliament in a couple of days.

The NGO alleged that this Bill will give free hand to the corporates without responsibilities. “They’d (American companies) only have to pay a meagre amount, and Indian taxpayers would be stuck paying crores for the nuclear clean up and to compensate the victims,” Greenpeace said.

There has been no public debate and the Prime Minister is “appeasing American interests” and “ignoring our safety”, the group said even as it asked for people to file an online petition to stop the Bill.
