Taxi driver murder shocks Aizawl

Aizawl, Jan 16, 2010: The decomposed body of miss ing taxi driver, Chawnghmingthanga (36) who was untraced since December 8 last year was found. The dead body was recovered at Mizoram’s Lengpui Airport road on January 12.

Police also arrested the per son who killed the driver and sold the taxi. Laltanpuia (23) of Salem Veng in Aiz awl was arrested by the police on Janu ary 11 and Chawnghmingthanga’s dead body was recovered the next day.

The news of Chawnghmingthanga missing incident was first noticed on December 8 by his family members, co-drivers and villagers. After an FIR was registered, police along with people from various hamlets in Aizawl launched search operation but to no avail.

Meanwhile, according to the Aizawl police Laltanpuia hired Chawnghmingthanga’s taxi and went to Rangvamual area and drank liquor together at Thari’s on the fateful night of December 8. Heated argument followed betweem them when Chawnghmingthanga asked for the taxi fare.

The argument resulted in the death of the taxi driver. The culprit with the help of a folding knife killed the driver and threw the body at Lengpui road.

Laltanpuia changed the number plate of the taxi and re-coloured the taxi after the incident. After hav ing done the needed repairing he sold it to one Lalhmangaiha of Tuikual in Aizawl. Laltanpuia then bought a second hand Maruti car bear ing AS 01 G7116.

In con­nection with the brutal murder of the taxi driver, Mizoram Taxi Owners Assn, MPCC Driver Welfare and Mizo National Front (MNF) party demanded strong action against the culprit. Various organisations in the state have condemned the act of Laltanpuia.
