Cattle disease spreads across Mizoram
Situation under control, say govt officials
Aizawl, January 12, 2010 (Zonet): After the state capital’s cattle and pigs were struck by “a strange disease” in the mouth and foot, there are now reports coming from Champhai and Serchhip districts about buffaloes and cattle being infected by the same virus.
‘Zonet’ reports that a good number of cattles and buffaloes have been laid up with foot and mouth disease in Champhai.
However, no loss of cattle was reported from any part of the state so far.
The bad news for cattle owners is that medicines to treat their cattles is still not available in the Veterinary Departmental stocks in the District except for the FMD vaccines which is given for preventive measures.
Cattle owners are now treating sick buffaloes and cows with Himax purchased from private medical stores.
Unlike, in Aizawl, the pigs in Champhai area are not yet infected by the disease.
In Serchhip District, about 8 cattle were found infected with the disease and are being treated.
Doctors in the animal husbandry claimed that the spread of the disease is under controlled now.
In Saiha, the District Magistrate has issued a prohibitory order banning slaughter of cattle since the last week. The prohibitory order issued under Section 144 of Cr. PC will remain valid for 60 days or till further order.
